The art of weaving has intrigued me since the age of twelve when I was allowed to sit on the loom bench at a farm museum and weave. While still a student at Millersville University in Pennsylvania, I attended Penland School of Crafts where I recieved most of my formal weaving training.
After graduating from Millersville University with a BA in Art, I started my own handweaving business, The Flying Shuttle, in 1976. Since 1996 I have concentrated on further expanding the technique of shaft-switching invented in the 1960s by Peter Collingwood and used mainly to create rugs using geometric patterns. Through the combination of this technique and my own hand-dyed multi-colored yarns,I strive to communicate a sense of the shifting colors and light due to geographical, seasonal and daily changes in the environment. Instead of using large areas of flat colors, yarns of many hues combine to create forms the way they actually occur in nature. Shaft-switching is particularly suited to this task because of its multi-layered weave structure and its design flexibility.
